Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, is supporting legislation that would give greater income tax breaks to families with children.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., would increase the personal exemption for children under 18 to $3,500 from the current $2,050.It was prompted by studies that said since World War II, the erosion of the personal exemption caused taxes to rise nearly twice as fast for families with children as for others.
"It is time to recognize that although we face serious budgetary problems, we cannot balance the budget upon the backs of families who are straining from tax burdens that are already too heavy," Hansen said.
He added, "This legislation is clearly one of the best methods to address the ongoing problems of tax fairness for families."
