Installation of two new basic oxygen furnaces - called Q-BOPs - is more than half completed at Geneva Steel. A crew of 310 workers is involved in the $62 million construction project, scheduled to be finished this fall. Each furnace is 29 feet, 8 inches tall and 26 feet, 4 inches wide and weighs nearly 1,300 tons when filled with steel. Each Q-BOP is capable of making 225 tons of steel in 45 minutes. The open hearths, which are being replaced by the Q-BOPs, are capable of producing 340 tons of steel in five hours.
