The Berlin Philharmonic will make its first U.S. appearance in five years with three concerts in June at New York's Carnegie Hall.

These will be the orchestra's first concerts in the United States since the death of Herbert van Karajan, the Berlin Philharmonic's music director from 1955 until 1989.Karajan's successor, Claudio Abbado, is not scheduled to conduct the New York concerts. They will be led by Bernard Haitink, the music director of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.

The program on Thursday, June 6, will consist of Haydn's Symphony No. 95 and Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, while the next day's concert will be Mahler's Symphony No. 6. The final concert, on June 8, will be the overture to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Mozart's Symphony No. 35 "Haffner," and Brahms' Symphony No. 2.
