Diabetics and people with epilepsy are at a slightly higher risk of accident while driving than is the general population, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

But their risk is decreasing considerably, it was reported, due to advances in the technology for managing the diseases."Proper medication, regular self blood-sugar monitoring and a greater understanding of its complications, all play a large part in managing diabetes and reduce the chance of body-control loss," notes Ann Setzer of Boehringer Mannheim Corp., which specializes in diabetes-management technology.

The study, conducted by the Marshfield Clinic and the Marshfield Medical Research Foundation, concluded that diabetics and epileptics should not have any significant restrictions on their driving.
