A public meeting to decide where the new Fruit Heights municipal building will be located has been called for 8 p.m. Tuesday in the city offices, 281 S. Mountain Rd.

The city has $235,000 set aside to build a new city office building and was ready to go ahead on a site in Nichols Road Park, city administrator Belva Provost said.But a resident is suggesting a new site that would involve a land swap and the council wants to find out what city residents think, she said.

The Tuesday session is a public meeting, not a formal public hearing, Provost said, but residents are urged to attend.

Fruit Heights currently leases space for its city offices in the Rock Loft, a privately owned building that also houses a fruit cannery and gift shop on Mountain Road. The offices are cramped, and Provost said that unless new quarters are found, the city will lose its local justice of the peace court.

The state has established minimum standards for court facilities and Fruit Heights does not meet them and cannot with its current setup, she said.

Under the land-swap proposal, the city would acquire a .95-acre parcel at 980 S. 1250 East, fronting the Somerset Condominiums. In return, the city would trade a 1.1-acre parcel it owns on Mountain Road about a block south of the Rock Loft.

At Tuesday's session, the council will review the actions it has taken so far on choosing a site, review the advantages and disadvantages of all sites considered and then take final action on site selection.

Provost said the $235,000 budget for construction is set and no other money will be appropriated. The council could sell revenue bonds or hold a general obligation bond election to raise more funds but has chosen not to.

The $235,000 is money that has been put aside from tax revenue over the years.

Provost said a community center proposed for construction along with the municipal building has been dropped because the city did not receive a $609,000 Community Development Block Grant it requested through the Davis Council of Governments.
