Mr. James R. Pennington, 63, of Colonial Garden Apartments Bluefield, Virginia, died Wednesday at a Bluefield hospital.

Born in Beckley, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Edward Pennington and Hazel Painter Pennington. He was of the Protestant Faith. U.S. Army veteran of World War I.Mr. Pennington was a 1951 graduate of V.P.I. with a degree in Mine Engineering. He was the retired president of UV Industries, Inc. and Gullick Dobson, Inc. He was past president of Utah Mining Assn. and Utah-Wyoming Coal Operators Assn. He has been a consultant for the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey and the University of Utah's College of Mines. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Alta Club in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Surviving: daughters, Denise Pennington; Susan Scritchfield; son, Robert J. Pennington, all Salt Lake City; sister, Patricia Farmer, Alta Vista, Virginia; grandson, James R. Scritchfield, Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, First Baptist Church in Galax, Virginia, Dr. Carroll Golden, officiating. Burial: Felts Memorial City Cemetery in Galax. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association. Mercer Funeral Home of Bluefield is in charge of arrangements.
