A car chase and subsequent three-vehicle accident claimed the life of a Salt Lake woman Saturday and seriously injured three others.

Killed in the accident:Lusinita Tuupo, 47.

Police said Tuupo died at the scene, in the intersection of 400 South and 1000 West.

The chase began about 9:15 a.m. near South Temple and Chicago Street (940 West), when a white car, driven by an unidentified person, began tailing the car driven by Andrew Quorp, 33.

Speeds reached 45-65 mph during the chase, which ended when Quorp collided with a van driven by Tuupo, police said.

The van rolled over once and landed on a pick-up truck moving eastbound on 400 South.

Tuupo was trapped behind the van's steering wheel. Emergency personnel used cutting tools and pushed the van slightly off the ground to remove other passengers who were injured.

Two passengers in the van, Olive Taukalev, 56, and Tonga Tuha, 46, were taken to University Hospital. Taukalev's left arm was broken in the accident and Tuha was treated for head lacerations.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not been released, was not injured. Officers were searching for the driver of the white car Saturday, according to Salt Lake Police Sgt. Stan Gibson.
