The fifth annual "Jazz at the Library" program is scheduled April 3, 4 and 6, at Whitmore Library, 2197 E. 7000 South.

The program is jointly sponsored by the Salt Lake County Library System and the Salt Lake Jazz Society and is targeted at serious musicians and music lovers of all ages.Admission is free.

The festival includes two evenings of concerts and an afternoon of workshops.

"The Underpaid Professor" will present a concert and informal question-and-answer clinic on Wednesday, April 3, 7 p.m. The group consists of University of Utah music instructors Keven Johansen, Dan Waldis, Jim Stout and Jay Lawrence.

The "Phoenix Jazz Band" and the Alta High School jazz band will be featured Thursday, April 4. The 17-piece Phoenix group will perform at 7 p.m. The average age of this seasoned group is 72 years. In contrast, the Alta band has an average age of 17. It will perform at 8:15 p.m.

Jazz festival workshops are scheduled for Saturday, April 6, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. The workshops will feature lectures on jazz improvisation and arranging for small groups along with clinics covering woodwind, brass and percussion, big-band rehearsal and performance. Instruction will be geared to all ability levels. Participants are invited to bring instruments and join in the sessions.
