Our beloved mother and daughter, Dixie A. MacKay, passed away February 28, 1991, at the University of Utah Medical Center.
She was born February 7, 1943, in Cedar Vale, Kansas, the daughter of Henry R. and Mable Henderson Atkinson. Married Michael C. MacKay, June 1, 1961, later divorced.Survived by: two sons, Richard K., Robert R., and Cindy, one grandson, Jeremy, Kearns, Utah; parents, Henry R. and Mable Atkinson, West Valley City; aunts, uncles and many other relatives and friends.
Dixie was a career educator and truly loved her profession. She received her elementary and junior high education in Kansas. She graduated from Granger High School. She received a B.S. from the BYU. She taught sixth grade at Hillside Elementary School and had taught at Farnsworth, West Kearns and Monroe elementary schools. She was a member of the TAT (Teachers Assisting Teachers) project in Granite School District. In the early 1970's she had and assignment with the U-Sail project. In 1985, she received a KSL "Teacher of the Week" award. She has served on numerous educational committees, projects and had been active in other professional organizations.
A member of the Granger Community Christian Church and served as organist, President of Elders and other positions. She used her musical talents in several other churches in the Salt Lake valley. Through shared ministry she served as a volunteer at the Utah State Prison and provided music for an inmate choir.
In 1988, she represented the West Valley Club, International Training in Communication, Council 2 (Utah), Snake River Region (W.W. States) in the International Speech Contest in Orlando, Florida.
Dixie had many talents. Music was a special talent and enjoyment. She was an organist, accompanist and vocalist. She enjoyed the many musical programs when she presented or was a participant.
She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. She accepted the challenges life presented to her. She would effect you to meet this challenge and move on with successes and happiness in your life.
Public Eastern Star Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 4, 1991, at 1 p.m., in the Masonic Temple, 650 East South Temple, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Friends may also call Sunday evening, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Mackay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 Highland Drive. Interment, Memorial Estates, 6500 So. Redwood Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star Educational Fund, Shriners Hospital or other charities.
