To make your baby's birth official, state officials charge you $12 for a birth certificate.

Since 1986, $3 of that fee has been channeled into the Children's Trust Fund, a statewide fund intended for child-abuse prevention. Now there's a luxury model birth announcement - the Heritage Birth Certificate, which is suitable for framing, of course.

The full-color document, with a drawing of a child and parents, was designed by Utah artist Trevor Southey. Utah's Heritage Birth Certificate costs $35, $20 of which is earmarked for the Children's Trust Fund.

Leslie Komatsu, prevention specialist in the Utah Division of Family Services, said $350,000 will be budgeted for a comprehensive statewide child abuse prevention plan. The trust is administered through the state Department of Human Service.

Last year, trust fund programs collectively served more than one million people.
