Monday, March 4, is the deadline for applications for the Utah Arts Festival's 1992 Composer Commission. Composers are asked to submit three copies of a current orchestral work and a 15-minute tape containing selections from past work.
The piece to be commissioned will be an 8-to-12 minute orchestral work, with a fee of $5,000 to be paid the winning composer. Judges will include Joseph Silverstein, Maurice Abravanel, Ardean Watts, Merrill Bradshaw, John R. Halliday and this year's commissioned composer, Henry Wolking.Wolking's "Forests" will be premiered by the Utah Symphony June 26 at this year's festival. That same night the 1992 commission winner will be announced.
For information call 322-2428.
- TWO $5,000 COMPOSITION PRIZES are also available this year through the Barlow International Competition, administered through Brigham Young University.
One is for a 12-to-20 minute piece for brass quintet, to be performed by the Empire Brass in their 1991-92 season. The other is for a piece of similar length for one of the standard chamber-music groupings (e.g., string and piano trio and/or quartet, woodwind quintet etc.) as well as the classic "Pierrot Lunaire" configuration, with one additional performer allowed (voice, piano, string, wind etc.).
Composers may enter both competitions but may only win one. No application forms or fees are required. Instead applicants are requested to submit a score and cassette tape of the work, which must have been completed in the last four years, since the last Barlow International Chamber Music Competition. No information identifying the composer should appear on the score or tape but should be attached to the score in a sealed envelope.
All materials must be received by July 1, with the winners to be announced by September. For information contact the Barlow International Competitions, HFAC, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah 84602.
