Southern Utah University's DaVor Marcelic and Peter Johnson combined for 80 points to lead the Thunderbirds to a 115-98 road victory Friday night over Cal State Northridge.
The win gives SU a 16-12 record for the season and marks the most wins and best winning percentage posted by a T-Bird squad since joining the Division I ranks three years ago.Marcelic, a 6-7 junior forward, scored all 43 of his points consecutively before missing his a shot with 7:03 remaining in the contest. He finished 14-for-15 from the field, 7-for-8 from three-point range and 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Johnson, a senior guard playing in his final game as a T-Bird, shot 12-for-20 from the field, 1-for-1 from three-point range and 11-for-12 from the line.
Cal State Northridge took the early lead in Friday night's game, jumping ahead 22-17 behind five quick points by by Matador guard Andre Chevalier and four from center Percy Fisher.
Southern Utah battled back, knotting it up at 28-28 with 8:02 left in the half. The T-Birds took a 38-36 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half and extended it to 50-47 at halftime.
The T-Birds took control of the second half, getting up to a 68-56 lead in the first five minutes. The Matadors never could catch up.
Southern Utah shot .661 from the field, .883 from three-point range and .857 from the line. Guard Kyle Karlegan led the Matadors with 21 points.
