The Hyatt hotel group has cut 25 percent off regular room rates for guests aged 62 and over at its 108 properties in North America and the Caribbean.

The discounts are in response to the growing number of senior travelers, a Hyatt official said. He noted that the rate was subject to availability and had to be requested when guests make reservations. In London, Americans and Canadians who book two or more nights at the Savoy are given $250 worth of gift vouchers plus free transport to and from Heathrow or Gatwick Airports. The offer is valid until April.

Under a law designed to protect the humpback whale, Hawaii is banning jet skis, para-sailing and other high-speed operations west and south of Maui until May 15.

The law took effect Dec. 15. The five-month winter season is when humpbacks swim more than 3,000 miles from Alaska to Maui to give birth and nurse their calves.

Humpback whales have been on the endangered species list since 1966.

The legislation also placed a year-round Sunday ban on all commercial recreational boats in Kaneohe and Maunalua Bays in Oahu.

When a similar prohibition was introduced last July it applied only to certain commercial activities like para-sailing and water sledding on weekends and holidays.

The ban has now has been broadened to cover all commercial activities on Sundays, including scuba diving, snorkeling and windsurfing.
