Iraq said it was pardoning army deserters, draft dodgers and soldiers who had gone absent without leave, state radio Baghdad reported Monday. Deserters normally would face execution.

The radio quoted a statement by the Revolution Command Council - Iraq's highest executive body - as saying those pardoned had a week to report to their units. Iraq last week discharged from active service reservists born between 1953 and 1956.
