- Reader's Digest American Heroes:

Lois Marsing, Imogene Mingo and Ellis Nelson are three Granite Park Junior High School teachers who have been nominated for the Reader's Digest 1991 American Heroes in Education Awards.This is a national program designed to honor educators who are making a difference in U.S. schools. The three teachers were selected from nominations by fellow teachers. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of distinguished educators, and winners will be announced in April.

- Suzanne J. Addison earns "CLA" designation:

The National Association of Legal Assistants has announced that Suzanne J. Addison of Salt Lake City has successfully completed the two-day Certified Legal Assistant examination to earn the "CLA" designation.

- Hillcrest debate team places fifth at Stanford:

The debate team from Hillcrest High finished fifth in the sweepstakes competition at the Stanford University Invitational Tournament, held earlier this month in Palo Alto, Calif.

In the Lincoln-Douglas debate category, Monica Bangerter placed fifth and Lori Hill placed eighth. Michael Voss was a quarter-finalist.

Hillcrest dominated the finals of the Student Congress event with eight students making it to the final round: Josh Edson, Alyse Darrington, Colby Engstrum, Tamara Przybyla, Jill Farnsworth, Jax Pettey, Andrew Riggle and Angie Lowry. Engstrum placed fourth overall, and Edson was selecting as the presiding officer for the final session.

Chad Curtis was fourth, and Voss finished fifth in the varsity impromptu speaking category. Darrington was fifth in the novice speaking event.

Shelly Dockstader was a semifinalist in extemporaneous speaking, while Ryan Christianson was a finalist in the dramatic interpretation category. In the triathlon competition, Voss was third and Curtis finished fourth.

Hillcrest debate adviser is Susan Malone.

- Hillcrest finalists in National Merit Scholarship Program:

Three Hillcrest High seniors - Amy Seal, Sharon R. Thomson and Nicole L. Urquhart - are among those who have achieved finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

- Hillcrest "Reflections" contest winners:

Hillcrest had nine students place in the PTA's annual "Reflections" writing contest. These region winners included Dylan Girardo, Teralee Schipaanboord and Nicole Urquhart in the literature category and Shanna Peirce in the music event.

Other winners include James Gammell in photography and Mark Mason, Mandy Matthews, Jason Richards and Anthony Jay Romrell in the visual arts category.

- Hillcrest selected as a Blue Ribbon School:

Hillcrest has been selected as the only Utah high school to make it into the final round of the national Blue Ribbon School competition, indicative of Hillcrest's well-rounded educational programs in the areas of academics, activities and athletics.

- The government officers of Hillcrest also sponsored "Freedom Week" Feb. 11-15 at their school to express their support for the patriotic values that guide America.

- Patrice Tadje honored:

The Salt Lake County Administrative Services Department Office of Volunteer Services recently honored Patrice Tadje for her volunteer work on the Alcohol and Drug Planning Allocation Council (ADPAC). She has served as a volunteer since 1986 and has been instrumental in developing model systems for alcohol and drug programs where no program previously existed.

Tadje is a licensed social worker who willingly shares her years of experience with adolescent and adult substance abuse.

"Ms. Tadje's knowledge of resources, both treatment agencies and funding, and her own ethical system was a valuable asset to the division," Barbara Hardy, Director of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Services Division said.
