A Salt Lake man was killed and a California man seriously injured Monday when their pickup slammed into a street sweeper shrouded by a cloud of dust just south of the Salt Lake International Airport.
Killed in the accident was:Ronald E. Davis, 24, 3043 S. 2300 East.
Davis was driving south on 4000 West between the Salt Lake International Airport and I-80 when his truck hit a Salt Lake Airport Authority sweeper that was cleaning the left shoulder on an overpass at about 11:45 a.m.
Stiff winds were kicking up dust from the sweeper, completely obscuring it from Davis' view. Another southbound car changed lanes to move around the dust cloud, but Davis' vehicle drove directly into the cloud, and into the back of the sweeper.
"There were no skid marks. He drove right into it," said Reid Garff, the Salt Lake police officer investigating the accident.
Davis died at the scene of the accident, Garff said. Davis had just picked up his passenger, Harvey Grusky, 50, Woodland Hills, Calif., who suffered head injuries. He was in serious condition and in intensive care at LDS Hospital early Tuesday, according to a nursing supervisor.
The driver of the sweeper was not injured.
