The BYU spring football game has been canceled and will be replaced with a March 23 scrimmage which will be free to the public, announced BYU Athletic Director Glen Tuckett.
The scrimmage will begin at noon in Cougar Stadium. It will feature the offense vs. the defense instead of the traditional Blue vs. White game format.A motivational seminar, scheduled for March 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the Marriott Center, will be held as planned, Tuckett said. Speakers at the seminar will be Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Chicago Bear wide receiver Glen Kozlowski and Coach LaVell Edwards. The seminar is free and is open to the general public.
The game was canceled due to uncertainties about the weather and because of NCAA rules which restrict the number of days teams can practice in the spring. Under new NCAA regulations that went into effect this year, the team can have 15 practice sessions in 22 days. Only 10 practice sessions can be conducted with players wearing full pads.
Recent bad weather has delayed the start of BYU's spring practice by several days. The new rule states that once the team holds its first practice, it must complete the 15 practice sessions within 22 days, regardless of the weather or other circumstances. Edwards felt the team might not be able to have enough practice sessions to be ready for the spring game March 23.
"Once we start (practicing), we are locked into going ahead, and we don't have any alternatives," Edwards said.
