The City Council formally terminated a redevelopment project for south Provo on Tuesday.

Property owners who wanted to turn a 90-acre parcel of ground between I-15 and University Avenue into a redevelopment district were unable to muster enough support for the proposal. Two owners holding more than 40 percent of the land balked at the plan. By state statute, the Provo City Redevelopment Agency could not create the district because it lacked that percentage of the proposed area. The RDA, which is made up of council members, unanimously approved a resolution terminating the project.

Ron Madsen, RDA executive director, said the agency considered developing the property for a shopping center or the extension of East Bay.
