The new figures bring the total number of acquired immune deficiency syndrome cases reported to the WHO since the U.N. agency began keeping cumulative tallies in 1980, to 334,215.As usual WHO officials cautioned that fragmentary reporting procedures, particularly in Africa, conceal the fact that the total is much higher. The general rule of thumb is to estimate the true total at three times the officially listed figure, according to officials of the WHO's Global Program on AIDS.
