On the night of June 15, 1990, Burton Linderer answered the door to his Salt Lake apartment and was greeted by one of the men who had been staying with him for the past several days.
Moments earlier, Linderer had separated the man - Joseph Slattery Jr. - from another man because they became involved in a drunken brawl. He took Slattery outside, away from the party at 655 S. 1000 West, in order to let him cool off. Linderer returned inside about 30 minutes later - alone.
Slattery went to his car and got an AK-47 assault rifle from the trunk. He then went to the front door and knocked. When Linderer opened the door, Slattery shot him in the face, court documents and police reports state.
Slattery's father, Joseph Slattery Sr., saw the shooting, grabbed his son and said, "Let's get out of here," witnesses said. The two men then jumped into Linderer's tan and brown two-door Ford LTD vehicle with Oregon license plates and left the scene. They have not been seen since.
Prosecutors charged the 20-year-old Slattery with second-degree murder and his father with obstructing justice and warrants were issued for their arrest. Both men have records in Arizona and have worked as miners.
