To the editor:
On Tuesday, April 9, residents of Utah County will have a unique opportunity to go to the polls and vote in a special election to build a special events center on the campus of Utah Valley Community College. There are four reasons why this proposal warrants a "yes" vote.First, this election offers the people of Utah County a window of opportunity that may never present itself again. Should voters approve the $7.7 million bond Tuesday, it will be combined with $10 million in state monies. We will be getting a $17.7 million facility for less than $8 million. Combined with the land already available on the UVCC campus, the special events center is a buy that will not be available in the future.
Second, this vote does not cause an undue burden on voters by increasing property taxes. Instead, the bond will be funded by a 1 percent tax on prepared foods at restaurants and fast food outlets. This is a way to spread the payment fairly across the entire population and especially to those who do not pay a property tax but will be contributing to the economy through eating at our food establishments.
Third, this facility will allow us to keep our dollars in Utah County that otherwise might be spent in other areas of the state for entertainment. We will be able to host conventions, sporting events and tournaments, trade shows, boat shows, recreational vehicle shows, gymnastics events, rodeos and other family entertainment.
Fourth, this facility will be available to everyone in Utah County. The use of the building will be open to local civic groups, companies, associations and public gatherings. The county and cities will have representation on the building's board of directors. This will not just be a UVCC building or an Orem/Provo building, it will be Utah County's Special Events Center.
I encourage all to exercise your right to vote Tuesday. It is your responsibility and privilege.
Kerry D. Romesburg
President
