Kenya's Jonah Koech of Iowa State lowered his meet record in the men's 5,000 meters and Sonia O'Sullivan of Villanova kept her bid for a double victory alive by winning the women's version of the same race Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Koech took the lead for good after 400 meters, finishing in 13 minutes, 36.64 seconds. He had set the meet mark of 13:37.94 in winning the event last year.O'Sullivan, a native of Ireland who led Villanova to the NCAA women's cross country championship last year, captured the 5,000-meter race in 15:49.46, less than three hours after qualifying for Saturday's mile final in 4.41.88.

The victory helped the Wildcats tie defending champion Texas for second place after Friday's opening night. Louisiana State, which has alternated with Texas in claiming the team title the past four years, led with 21 points. Texas and Villanova had 14 each.
