Salt Lake police were looking for four men Friday who assaulted and then shot a 47-year-old transient man in the leg.

The man was under a viaduct at 600 North near 550 West when he was confronted by four men who began picking a fight. They threatened him with a hammer, but then left, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Marty Vuyk. The men returned with a gun about 1:15 p.m. and another argument began. During the fight, one of the men fired a small caliber handgun at the victim. The bullet went through his leg, Vuyk said. The four suspects then drove off in a small red car.

The unidentified victim was taken to LDS Hospital, where he was in good condition, the lieutenant said.
