Coleen Roberts, coordinator for community services for the College of the Desert, Palm Desert, Calif., will speak at a benefit dinner Friday, April 12, sponsored by the American Association of University Women.

The 7 p.m. dinner in the downtown Salt Lake Hilton will benefit the association's Legal Advocacy Fund.Roberts was involved in a 12-year anti-discrimination suit against her institution. She was hired by the college in 1974 and filed suit for sex discrimination in 1988. She ultimately was awarded more than $500,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. Her suit was supported by the association's legal fund.

In turn, she donated $10,000 to the fund to help state divisions pursue equity cases. Women with equity complaints need not be members of American Association of University Women to benefit from the fund, which has provided more than $100,000 to support 18 lawsuits. The association has since developed additional programs to provide information about related case law and to reward institutions that have worked toward more equity for women.

For dinner reservations, send a check for $25 to AAUW, 2630 Lincoln Lane, Salt Lake City UT 84124. Half of each donation will go to the Legal Advocacy Fund.
