Four Salt Lake police officers have been awarded the Police Star - the department's top service medal - for service beyond the call of duty during the past year.

Detectives Jed Hurst and Dave Harris received the honor for helping residents escape the early morning fire that destroyed the Roosevelt Apartments Jan. 3.Officers Dwayne Baird and Matt Newman also received the Police Star for helping rescue victims of another fire.

The awards were presented during a banquet where other exemplary service medals were given to officers and area residents.

Civilian Service Medals were awarded to Tavita Havili, Etuate Havili and Sean P. Murray. Citizen Service Medals were awarded to Pres Isaac Garcia, Cal Nez, Robert Gilchrist, John Purin, Jeff Mitchell, R.M. Kern, Kelly Wallace and Mary Breighner.

The Chief's Award was given to the members of the Gang Narcotics Intelligence Unit, who are Salt Lake Lt. Steve Chapman, Sgt. Ken Hansen and detectives Kevin Crane, Isi Tausinga, Louie Muniz and Dave Askerlund; University of Utah Police Department Sgt. Ron Stallworth; Salt Lake County Sheriff's detectives Dave Burdett and Ken Eyre; Murray Police Detective Rick Thornton; and Sandy Police Detective Ron Bullock. The award was also given to area residents Shaunna Keahey and Susan O'Connor.
