Randall L. Jones has been named dean of the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University, President Rex E. Lee has announced.

Jones will assume the post this summer, replacing Dean Todd A. Britsch who has been named an associate academic vice president.The new dean is a professor of German who joined the BYU faculty in 1978 and has been director of the BYU Humanities Research Center since 1980.

In addition to extensive research in German language syntax, dialects and history, Jones has developed a number of computer programs for language instruction, syntactic analysis, text retrieval and interactive video.

Several of his current projects include development of a 700,000-word computerized corpus of modern spoken German and a concordance to the Hamburger Edition of the Complete Works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Jones obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees at BYU and his doctorate at Princeton University. He also has studied at the University of Bonn in Germany.

The professor has been on the faculty at Cornell University.
