CIRCUMSTANCES IN FATAL ROLLOVER PROBED

Investigation was continuing Tuesday in the death of a West Valley teenager who died early Sunday in an automobile rollover on the Middle Canyon road about 2 1/2 miles from the Tooele City limits.

Wayne Paul Kaufman Jr., 14, who just completed the ninth grade at Granite District's Westlake Junior High School, was pronounced dead at Tooele Valley Regional Medical Center following the accident, which occurred between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m., said Tooele County Deputy Sheriff Judd Ericson.Ericson said Tuesday morning he is still trying to determine who was driving the 1979 compact car, which was "traveling too fast for existing conditions," and to learn other circumstances surrounding the accident.

The car is registered to DeWayne Quintana, 25, West Valley City. He, the Kaufman youth and George M. Bjerregaard, 24, also of West Valley City and an uncle of the youth were in the vehicle, which was heavily damaged.

Ericson said the vehicle slid sideways through gravel, rolled twice and came to rest about 331 feet from where it left the paved road. The teenager, who suffered mainly head injuries, was thrown from the vehicle.

The deputy said the two men walked about 21/2 miles from the accident scene to a farmhouse, where the accident was reported by Bjerregaard. He was treated and released from the Tooele hospital. Ericson said Quintana told him Monday that he received back injuries in the accident.
