SOUTH KOREAN DISSIDENTS FIGHT RIOT POLICE

Dissidents battled riot police Wednesday after 30,000 mourners thronged central Seoul for boisterous funeral rites for a student killed during an anti-government demonstration.

About 2,000 students armed with firebombs surged out of sidestreets and clashed with the police after occupying a street near National Police Headquarters. The protesters chanted for the ouster of President Roh Tae-woo.The marchers took over broad boulevards to stage sit-downs and roadside rallies until past midnight.

The funeral came seven weeks after police fatally beat another student, triggering nationwide protests that have become the most serious political crisis since Roh took office in 1988.
