A Police Department shooting review board has cleared Detective Kelly Rushton of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting May 30 of Mark Joseph Pyle during a SWAT raid.
Police Chief Dennis Nordfelt released the board's findings Wednesday, six days after the board met to review the incident in which Rushton fatally wounded Pyle after Pyle shot Rushton, hitting his body armor, and Sgt. Ed Spann, who was wounded in the thigh by a .45-caliber bullet. The shooting took place inside Pyle's house during a surprise nighttime narcotics raid. The board, composed of an officer's peers and supervisors, reviews all instances when an officer discharges a weapon. The Salt Lake County attorney's office also is investigating the incident and likely will release its findings early next week, Nordfelt said.
