REBELS BOMB 15 BANKS AS PERU VIOLENCE CLAIMS 2

Leftist guerrillas bombed 15 banks in working class districts on the outskirts of the capital and two people were killed in other guerrilla-related activity, police and news reports said.

It was unclear which of Peru's two main rebel groups was involved in the attacks Wednesday. Both the Maoist Shining Path and the smaller, pro-Castro Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement frequently bomb banks and attack police.A passer-by was killed Wednesday during a shootout between police and eight guerrillas in downtown Lima, police said. Police said two police officers and two rebels were seriously wounded, and all the rebels were captured.
