School lunch in the Provo School District will cost 25 cents more per meal next academic year.
The Provo School Board voted Tuesday to increase elementary school lunches to $1 and secondary school meals to $1.15. Adults will pay $2.Superintendent Kay Laursen said the lunch program is self-sustaining and needs additional money to repair and buy new kitchen and lunchroom equipment in the schools.
Also, the district will begin a three-month trial breakfast program at Franklin, Maeser and Timpanogos elementaries. The tentative cost is 65 cents, Laursen said.
"We've got some kids that come to school without food," Laursen said. Lack of breakfast hinders some children's ability to learn, he said.
The schools will report on the program to the board in October.
