REYNOLDS `CONTAMINATES' MOBIL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Butch Reynolds defied an international rule and possibly jeopardized all the athletes in the Mobil national championships, running a 400-meter heat and finishing seventh in a field of eight.

Others in the meet could be prevented from competing in international meets under the "contamination" rule in the bylaws of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the sport's world governing body. The rule states that any athlete knowingly competing in a meet with an ineligible athlete disqualifies himself from further competition.
