Five Sanpete County cities and Utah Power & Light Co. have agreed to share the cost of a $1,500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of individuals who have been shooting out power line insulators.
The vandalism has affected a 46,000-volt line between Manti and Moroni, according to Paul Henry, UP&L's Richfield district manager. Some of the incidents have caused power outages lasting several hours in some of the cities affected. The destruction usually occurs in the west side of the Sanpete Valley at isolated sites that are sometimes hard for repair crews to locate.
"This is a serious problem," Henry said, because it can affect personal safety as well as service to hospitals, schools and industries.
Sharing reward costs with UP&L are Manti, Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant, Spring City and Fairview. Citizens who may have information on vandalism of power lines and equipment are asked to call the Sanpete County Sheriff's Deptartment in Manti, 835-2191, or any city police department.
