Ingrid Butts, a member of the 1988 U.S. Winter Olympics team, skied about a snow-packed oval set up at the City-County Building prior to lighting the ceremonial torch at Saturday's Olympic Announcement Party.
The torch in one hand and ski pole in the other, Butts made gliding about the 100-yard track look easy. But further examination of the track revealed it was ridden with chunks of ice. "For somebody who was not at the level of skiing I'm at, it would have been really hard," Butts said.
Yet, Butts said she enjoyed the short, albeit bumpy run. It was, after all, the first time she attempted cross-country skiing in Utah in June.
"This has got to be a first, a once in a lifetime experience, I guess," she said.
