City officials have issued a water advisory asking residents from 9800-11700 South and from 2300 East to the foothills to refrain from watering lawns Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The action is necessary to avert a critical water shortage caused by an electrical failure in a water pumping system, said City Administrator Byron Jorgenson. He said a fire in an electrical circuit Monday afternoon shut down machinery used to boost water up to Sandy's east- bench neighborhoods. Replacement parts were on their way Tuesday but were not expected to be operational until Wednesday.
"We're trying to pump water up there as fast as we can, but we can't keep up with demand," Jorgenson said.
He warned that the area could have no water at all by Wednesday morning if residents don't conserve. "If people will just not water their lawns and gardens for one day, we should be OK."
