Registration is now under way for Dance West at Utah State University in Logan, with workshops running June 24-July 26. Maggi Moar is program director.

Courses will include American character (a style combining traditional ballet technique with the freedom of modern dance), ballet, modern and jazz, at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Some classes are suitable for teachers wanting refresher courses, Moar said.Faculty this summer will include Moar; Marsha Knight, co-director of the University of Wyoming's Dance Theatre Tour Company; Geneen Mathesius, former director of a leading East African dance company; and Angela Tolson.

"Marsha comes to us from the University of Wyoming, where she has been teaching and dancing," Moar said. "She is co-artistic director of the U.W. cultural outreach Dance Theatre Tour Company."

Mathesius, instructor of modern dance, is the former director of a leading East African dance company, Boma's of Kenya, which adapted traditional African dances for theatrical presentations.

If selected for a special Dance West performance class, students will work with the American Folk Ballet and perform in the Festival of the American West's stage presentation, "The West: America's Odyssey." Open auditions for the performance class will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at 5 p.m. in the HPER Building, Room 102. The audition is open to any dancer, 14 years or older, whether taking the workshop or not. Male dancers especially are encouraged to try out.
