SOVIET OFFICER AMBUSHED IN DISPUTED AREA

A Soviet Interior Ministry major has been killed in an ambush in Nagorno-Karabakh, a ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

Gunmen ambushed the officer's jeep Tuesday night on the road from Stepanakert, capital of the disputed Trancaucasian enclave, to Shusha. A soldier was seriously wounded.Soviet Interior Ministry troops have been trying to quell fighting between Azerbaijanis and Armenians over Nagorno-Karabakh, claimed by both republics.

Hundreds of people have died in the conflict in the past three years. Nagorno-Karabakh is located in and administered by Azerbaijan but populated mostly by Armenians.
