Margaret P. Battin and Helen Rollins were elected co-chairwomen of the Utah Memorial Association.
Battin is a professor of philosophy at the University of Utah and author of "Ethics in the Sanctuary." Rollins is case manager of the LDS Hospital's Transitional Care Center.Ralph Hathaway, U. biology professor, was named secretary of the organization, and Robert J. Utzinger, former regional director of the American Association of Retired Persons, was elected treasurer.
Rollins said the purpose of the organization is to promote personal autonomy in decisions concerning dying. The organization also encourages simplicity and economy after death.
Other board members are: the Rev. Marie S. Green, minister of Ogden's United Church of Christ; Glenn Johnson, AARP state director; Dr. Jack Petajan, a professor of neurology at the University of Utah Medical School; Cecil Samuelson, vice-president for medical affairs, Intermountain Health Care; and Dr. John Ward, U. professor of rheumatology.
Evans and Early Mortuary contracted with the organization to provide modestly priced funeral services to association members. Headquarters are at 569 S. 1300 East, and memberships are open to the public.
