JAPAN AGREES TO BAN IMPORTS OF RARE-TURTLE SHELLS

In a move aimed at relieving recent tension in U.S.-Japanese relations over Japan's trade in endangered species, the government decided Wednesday to ban imports by 1993 of shells of the rare Hawksbill turtle.

The United States has been threatening Japan with sanctions unless it agrees to stop imports of the shells, which are used for jewelry and eyeglass frames.Government officials agreed to halt the shell imports by 1993.
