A 5-year-old boy Saturday wandered onto a stretch of railroad tracks running through Manhattan's Riverside Park and was struck and killed by a passing Amtrak train, police said.

The unidentified child, who had come to the park with his mother and father, apparently crawled through a hole in a fence running alongside a section of tracks, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Wrensen. The boy was killed instantly at 4:48 p.m. when the train hit him, she said. It was not known whether the operator of the train had seen the child and there were no plans to charge anyone in the death, she added.
