WINFIELD SLAMS ANGELS PAST THE BLUE JAYS IN 11-8 SLUGFEST

Dave Winfield hit his ninth career grand slam and drove in five runs Saturday as the California Angels took a six-run lead and hung on for an 11-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Luis Polonia had his second five-hit game of the season as the Angels sent the Blue Jays to their fifth loss in seven games.Winfield's RBI grounder in the first put California ahead and his ninth home run made it 5-0 in the second off Willie Fraser, who replaced Dave Stieb as Toronto's starter just before gametime.

Stieb also missed his scheduled start last Tuesday because of tendonitis in his right shoulder. Toronto spokesman Howard Starkman said Stieb's status is day-to-day.

Mark Eichhorn (1-1), the second Toronto pitcher, got the victory in relief of Scott Lewis, knocked out after 3 2-3 innings, seven hits and four runs. Bryan Harvey pitched two innings for his 13th save.

Fraser (0-2) gave up six runs and seven hits in three innings.

Orioles 3, Red Sox 1

At Boston, Bob Milacki and four relievers combined on a three-hitter and Mike Devereaux hit a two-run homer as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox for their fourth victory in five games.

Milacki allowed one hit and one unearned run in 5 2-3 innings, struck out six and walked four. Kevin Hickey (1-0), Todd Frohwirth, Mike Flanagan and Gregg Olson finished, with Olson getting his eighth save.

Brewers 6, Yankees 3

At New York, Bill Wegman pitched two-hit ball for seven innings and former Yankee Willie Randolph went 4-for-4 as the Milwaukee Brewers slowed down New York with a victory.

The Yankees have won seven of their last nine games - including four in the final at-bat - but couldn't slove the oft-injured Milwaukee right-hander.

Indians 3, Tigers 1

At Cleveland, Greg Swindell pitched a five-hitter and Joel Skinner hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the fourth inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers.

Swindell (3-5) gave up an unearned run and struck out six as he lowered his ERA to 2.50. Swindell, who pitched his fourth complete game, walked none. He has walked only three batters in his last eight starts, a span of 65 2-3 innings.

Athletics 7, White Sox 4

At Chicago, Jamie Quirk tied the score with a home run in the seventh inning and hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning as the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox.

Alex Fernandez (2-5), winless in in eight starts since April 22, walked Harold Baines with one out in the ninth and the score tied at 4. Vance Law's groundout sent pinch runner Lance Blankenship to second and Bobby Thigpen relieved.

Twins 8, Royals 4

At Kansas City, Mo., Chili Davis hit a pair of two-run homers off Kevin Appier that litfed the Minnesota Twins to an victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Allan Anderson (2-4) went 6 1-3 innings for his first victory since April 10.

Mariners 12, Rangers 8

At Arlington, Texas, rookie Alonzo Powell had three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning, and the Seattle Mariners turned a triple play Saturday night in a fight-filled 12-8 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Powell's single off Kevin Brown (4-4) snapped a 3-3 tie and Scott Bradley added another two-run single through a drawn-in infield for a 7-3 lead.
