1 OF 11 UTAH PREGNANCIES ENDED IN ABORTION IN '89

In 1989, about one of every 11 pregnancies in Utah was terminated by an induced abortion, with 4,305 procedures performed, according to a report by the Utah Department of Health.

That's the highest number of induced abortions ever recorded in the state, about a 4 percent increase from 4,149 recorded in 1988, said John E. Brockert, director of the state's Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics. 1989 is the latest year for which figures are available.Among neighboring states, Utah's abortion ratio of 121 abortions per 1,000 live births tops rates in Idaho and Wyoming, which rate 114 and 48, respectively. Nevada had an abortion ratio of 407 per 1,000, while Arizona had a ratio of 271.
