The Weber County Commission voted unanimously to require emissions testing and maintenance for most vehicles beginning next January.

The action means motorists will pay $14 per year for testing, plus more if repairs are needed. The program is aimed at reducing levels of carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas that is known to cause health problems, especially for people with coronary and respiratory problems.

In January 1990, carbon monoxide was detected at up to 14 parts per million in downtown Ogden, violating the federal eight-hour-average standard of 9 parts per million.

There were no known violations of the standard last winter, but health officials convinced commissioners that testing and maintenance are necessary because of continued increases in carbon monoxide levels in Ogden.
