A man accused of kidnapping a 13-year-old Salt Lake girl was being held in a Montana jail Tuesday after being stopped by officers at the Canadian border Monday.
Sandy detective Sgt. Craig Watson said the girl, whose mother lives in Sandy, was living with a family in Salt Lake City when she disappeared Jan. 19. Police have been looking for the girl and a family acquaintance since then. Watson said U.S. Border Patrol officers detained the man after he and the girl tried to pass into Canada.Thomas C. Hedley, 44, has been charged in 3rd Circuit Court in Salt Lake with one count of child kidnapping, a first degree felony, and was being held in a Great Falls jail lieu of $25,000 bail Tuesday. Extradition proceedings will begin if Hedley cannot pay the bail, Watson said.
