TEEN BOOKED AFTER SHOTGUN IS FIRED IN SCHOOL

A student at a private school has been booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center for investigation of aggravated assault and illegally discharging a firearm.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's Detective Jeff Carr said a 15-year-old boy brought a single-shot shotgun that had been broken down into two pieces to the Turnabout School, 4545 S. 2300 East, Monday morning. The boy removed the gun from a day pack, put it together, loaded it and fired a shot into the ceiling of a classroom containing 10 to 12 students.A school counselor heard the shot and came to the room where he confronted the boy who had reloaded the gun, Carr said. The boy threatened the counselor but did not fire the gun. After talking for a few minutes, the counselor was able to wrestle the gun away from the boy.

Carr said the boy indicated he wanted out of the school program, which is tailored to students with behavioral problems.

No one was injured by the shotgun blast, but a girl in the classroom apparently struck her head as she and other students fled the classroom, Carr said.
