With perhaps an unseemly touch of envy, we applaud the deal Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf signed with Bantam Books, which will pay him $5 million for his memoirs.

Given the general's lifetime of service, culminating in the stunning military victory in Kuwait, that nice round figure seems appropriate, according to the wild standards of American publishing. It's doubly nice to know that Schwarzkopf's $5 million far outstrips the sum that Kitty Kelley, Nancy Reagan's least favorite person, received for her "unauthorized biography." Let's just hope the general, in trying to justify his lavish payment, doesn't feel compelled to dream up stories about Frank Sinatra.
