Prime Minister Sid Ahmed Gozali held consultations Thursday after being named to head a new government to take the north African country through a state of siege imposed to quell riots led by Muslim fundamentalists, officials said.

President Chadli Benjedid appointed Gozali, formerly the foreign minister, Wednesday evening to replace Mouloud Hamrouche who resigned with his cabinet at the height of clashes between fundamentalists of the Islamic Salvation Front and security forces.
