Defending champion Gianni Bugno won the 10th stage of the Tour of Italy, an individual against-the-clock race, on Wednesday - and moved to within one second of the overall lead in the cycling race.
Franco Chioccioli started the stage with lead of 1:03 minutes over Bugno in the standings and barely managed to stay in front. He finished eighth in the 25.8-mile race. The victory was the second on the tour for Bugno who was clocked in 55 minutes, 13 seconds.
Frenchman Jean Francois Bernard was runner-up, eight seconds back.
American Greg LeMond trailed Bugno by 1:36 minutes.
LeMond, criticized for lagging behind by 14 minutes in Tuesday's leg, has been accused of using this race as a warmup for the French Tour.
He said he still hoped to win a stage in Italy.
"I'll be in good form for the last week," LeMond said.
