A city convention center should be built on the Southern Utah University campus to take advantage of existing facilities and to keep costs down, a committee has decided.
The panel appointed by the City Council and the city's Redevelopment Advisory Committee concluded a joint venture between the city, Iron County and the university would be the most financially beneficial to all three. The recommendation now goes to the Iron County Commission, the Cedar City Council, the Iron County School Board and the SUU Advisory Council for approval.
Members from all four entities sit on the Redevelopment Advisory Committee.
The proposed center, connecting the SUU Student Center and the Centrum special events center, would be the largest south of the Wasatch Front.
It would include kitchen, dining and ballroom facilities and rooms to be used for college activities when not being used for conventions.
