Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird had a disc in his back removed in delicate surgery Friday to correct a complicated problem that limited his playing ability last season and caused him severe pain. Team physician Arnold Scheller said the surgery at New England Baptist Hospital went smoothly and predicted Bird would be able to play next season. But he said it would be "naive" to believe the procedure would relieve Bird of all pain.
Bird, 34, who will have to wear a back brace over the summer, was expected to leave the hospital within two or three days.Locally . . .
